Computer Power Grid - A 21st Century Technology That Will Make a Better World

Scientist Flemming is working in the field of atomic physics trying to understand elementary particle radiation. He has to measure data in nearly 200 thousand channels. Dr Galvin is working on atmospheric turbulence modeling trying to understand the phenomenon of global warming. Both these scientists generate more than 10 million gigabytes of data each year - which is equivalent to the storage capacity of about 20 million CDs and would require more than 70000 of today's fastest PC processors to analyze it all. Computing power as they have to handle will be several peta bytes of data! That is to say they need additional computing power for their research work at affordable cost. How to get additional computing power? Is there a way out? The answer is computer power grid (CPG) in analogy with electricity power grid.

The way out:

There are nearly 750 million PCs in the world. On average each PC is used for 10% of the time. Remaining time all the PCs are idling. This is a fact of under utilization of available computer power. Suppose we create an environment where we can cluster all the computers in the world and create wide area parallel and a distributed computing with necessary networking protocols. Such an infrastructure called 'Computer Power Grid'(CPG) will enable sharing, selection and aggregation of a wide variety of geographically distributed computational resources including storage systems, data sources etc. owned by different organizations for solving large scale resource intensive problems by researchers in science, engineering and commerce.

What exactly is Computer Power Grid?

Grid computing is a large scale networking methodology of distributed computing and virtualization of data resources such as processing, network band width and storage capacity. CPG grants its users seamless access to vast IT capabilities as though he is working with a single large virtual computer. Suppose we net work one lakh PCs, it will yield computing power of 200 CPU years/day. Such technology will be influencing the way we do research and transforming scientific, engineering, commerce and many more disciplines.

Brief History:

In 80's, one could link two computers through 'internet working protocol'. In 90's, hyper text protocol came into existence. WWW (World Wide Web) exploded. In 1995, concept of grid computing was introduced by Foster and Kesselman & Stevan Tuecke widely regarded as the fathers of the grid computing. They continued to develop this concept and for the first time, instrumental in integrating peer to peer computing and web-services to provide seamless access to remote mammoth computer power. Virtually, their protocols provide any computer the ability to peep into cyber space irrespective of location and avail resources from any nook and corner and use them for any power hungry application. With realization of CPG, organizations can optimize computing and data resources and pool them and share them judiciously with due regard to commercial viability.

What is challenge in CPG?

We know the resources which are to be put into Grid are geographically distributed across multiple administrative domains with varying availability, heterogeneity, diversity of use, varying cost, varying adaptability, etc. Managing such vast and variable resources and scheduling of purpose at viable cost constitute a complex task. Basically CPG involves three collaborative parties namely the Resources Owners, Resource customers and Resource distributors and who can join hands based on viable economic frame work with certain trade-offs. Each party has to work within certain demand-supply working model for best win-win results.

The future:

This 21st Century technology is going to alter the way we live. Already several excellent CPG's are in operation in the world. One such example is the teragrid of US National Foundation established at a cost of US $ 88 m has a computing power of 21 tfo/s. Several such computing grids will change the way the hospitals work, the way knowledge resources utilized, the way the educational institutions and so on combined with availability of access from anywhere to every where. The application of CPGs is limitless. Even situations like Bhopal Chemical spill can be handled much better way through CPG by instant exchange of vital information like traffic of vehicles, direction of wind, availability of hospitals, security and safety etc. which is beyond the scope of present day internet.

Future research in any branch of science, engineering or commerce will be done in virtual laboratories in which researchers will work in collaboration without regard to their physical location as well as resources location at much lower research cost. Already heavy weights like IBM, Sun Micro, Microsoft are in fray to establish CPG's for various applications. So with CPG evolving into multi billion industry World is going to be transformed for better, impacting every aspect of human living.

Smart Dust - Tiny Computer Stuff

Twenty four hours a day, year-in, year-out, doctor Flemming wants to monitor the heart rate and blood oxygen of a patient working in a factory at minimum cost in real time. Scientist Galvin was given the task of monitoring in real time two dozen variables in a very hostile environ around the clock over wide area in all three dimensions. This hostile environ could be a battle field scenario or uninhabited glacier of Himalayas. There are myriad such vexed complex problems, given a chance, which scientists wants to explore ceaselessly. It is endless list of problems like ecosystems, habitat of animals/birds, soil-biodiversity, nutrient cycling, climatology, flooding, traffic control, pollution and so on. We cannot solve complex problems with limited data. To illustrate, soil is the most complex layer in the chain of ecosystem, but it is poorly understood due to limited data collected by technicians through selective sampling for analysis in the laboratory. Is there a methodology to monitor such global phenomena ? Thanks to our scientists, the solution is in sight.

Today, we have tiny computers packed in a box size of just few millimeters called 'motes' or 'smart dust'. They have the ability to monitor data continuously in real time of the physical world on a large scale over large sample-population over large geography. Some call this tiny stuff 'motes', others call it 'smart dust'. Basically motes are building-blocks of wireless sensor network. Why 'Smart dust'? The name smart dust was coined by Pister, University of California, Berkely to describe his version of sensors joined in network in 1000's or even millions to comprehend a physical scenario as though it is observed by a human brain.

The core of a mote is a small low cost low power computer. A typical mote uses an 8-bit micro-computer that has 512 Kbytes of on board flash memory running at 4 MHz. The CPU usually matches with 8088 CPU of IBM PC with 10 bits A to D converter. It is designed to consume just 8 milli amp in working and 15 micro amp while in sleep. It can have operation life of nearly 150 hrs with two AA batteries. To consume power, it is made to sleep for 10 secs and wake up and give status for few microsecond before going to sleep again. A programmer writes software to control the mote and make it perform a certain way.

Deployment:

The motes are usually required to be deployed in 100's to millions with embedded sensors forming a self-organising sensor network despite limited processing power, storage, energy and bandwidth. There is no limit on type of sensors. Imagine any type of sensor from temperature, light, sound, position, acceleration, vibration, stress, weight, pressure and so on. The computer in the mote connects to the outside world with a radio link with transmitting range of about 5-100 m. Motes are packed in tiny size boxes of size not exceeding 5 mm. Current cost of the motes on average is about 25 US $ and likely to fall down with time.

Challenges:

Design, development and deployment include network discovery, control routing, information processing, querying and security, creating a sensor web for scientific applications requires extensive customization, new standards, dedicated operating system, programming and user friendly web tools. To cut down costs one needs to look into commercial adoption and networking on a larger scale, which is slowing the speed by several years.

The future:

Wireless sensor network have been identified as one of the most important upcoming technologies in the 21st Century. Wireless sensor network is going to revolutionize many physical field scenarios by making large scale measurements possible at temporal and spatial dimensions. There are myriad ways that motes might be used and as people appreciate the concept, the application scope will be even more. It is opening up a fascinating new field of distributed sensing which is far beyond the scope of present day knowledge. The diverse application in the future include agricultural management, complex structures and earth quake monitoring, industrial controls, military applications, transportation, shipping, fire-fighting and home-automation and many more - all at global scale.

Burned by Ubuntu?

If you've been involved with the IT community at all, or are even a serious internet addict, the chances are high that you have heard of Ubuntu Linux. If you have heard of it, then the chances are also good that you have considered installing the operating system, and playing around with it a little.

If you did install it, say, 2-3 years ago, chances are, things didn't work properly. I mean, things that "just worked" in good ole' XP, failed you entirely. You then did what you could to get rid of it, and vowed never to get involved with Linux ever again.

I would know, as I had similar problems the first time I ventured into the land of Linux. Here is my dim recollection of that moment.

I don't remember the first time I heard of Ubuntu. I only remember a few things about my experience installing it for the first time:

1. It installed fairly quickly.
2. I could never get my wireless card to work properly.
3. They forced me to fix things via the command line
4. I messed around with "sudo this' and "sudo that" to no avail.
5. I ended up having to reformat my entire hard drive to get rid of it.

Fast forward 2 years. Ubuntu is running as the only OS on my machine. WIreless works perfectly, as does printing, and most other features that are available for my laptop. In fact, most everything that I install works well. I never have to even look at a command line if I don't want to.

What changed? Well, Ubuntu improved, and drastically, I might add. Everything from stability, to usability and driver support are approaching windows-level compliance. In many areas, Ubuntu has surpassed Windows, especially performance.

If you feel like giving it another try, I can guarantee that you won't have the same problems with it that you did last time? Why? Well, for one, Ubuntu has added a Windows based installer to newer distributions that allows you to install and remove Ubuntu like a standard Windows application. No more accidents where GRUB wipes out all record of your NTFS partition, and makes Vista unbootable. What's the name of this magical program: Wubi.

How am I so sure that it is easy to use? It took me 15 minutes to get my friend's PC dual booting the other night. It installed Ubuntu as a single file. It also defaults to WIndows on boot, unlike Grub, which usually defaults to the latest kernel, and puts XP after 3 or 4 other kernel choices.

By minute number 30, my friend was running Linux versions of his favorite programs, like HandBrake and Audacity. He even discovered the newest version of KDEnlive for his video editing needs. The only issue that we had resolved itself on the next boot. His wireless card was not working. Ubuntu found the driver, and installed it on reboot. Happy day. No command line (except for the commands I learned, and wanted to issue, instead of going through graphical menus), and zero extra configuration.

Look, it's not an easy choice to try something again after you were burned. I suggest you do, however. If you can find the courage to try Ubuntu again, you have a pleasant surprise waiting for you: It comes in 3 flavors, based on the window manager of choice.

* Ubuntu - Gnome
* Kubuntu - KDE
* Xubuntu - XCFE

I'm going to go ahead and say that for 98% of you, vanilla Ubuntu is the way to go. All of the bells and whistles have been thoroughly tested and integrated to work with Gnome. The eye candy is great, and it just feels very polished. The only downside is that the performance requirements for all but the very oldest machines may be a bit too much.

Of the 2% of you that may want to run something besides Gnome-based Ubuntu, 99% of the 2% won't want to run KDE. On the plus side, it feels a bit more like a Windows based operating system. Except for the fact that it isn't nearly as user friendly as regular Ubuntu. There are some KDE diehards out there, but I'm not one of them. I don't have much more to say about KDE as a window manager.

If you have an older machine, XCFE is lightning fast. It takes up relatively little ram, is a great compromise, and runs most things fairly well. If you don't need alot of extra graphical polish (read: minimalist) then Xubuntu may be the way to go.

Now, I'm going to really confuse you. How? Well, if you really like a classy looking Linux install, with all the support of Ubuntu, and all the flair of a professional graphic designer, then you want Linux Mint. It's based on Ubuntu, and customized with versions of programs that have been altered to fit the Mint distribution. They can be a few months behind the latest Ubuntu distribution, but there is no doubt that it is a great distro.

So, now that I am through gushing, why don't you try downloading it, burning it to a disk, and giving it a once through using Wubi. Oh, and if you have problems with sound or wireless cards while using the Live CD, don't be so sure that you will have that problem when you do a full installation. 9 times out of 10, those problems are fixed in a full install.

So, go get your favorite pocket protector, strap on your safety glasses, and take the plunge. It will be nearly painless, and totally worth it. You can find all the extra info you need at Ubuntu.com.

I'm off to download a podcast, and get a cup of coffee. For the record, coffee has burned me once or twice, but that hasn't stopped me from drinking a pot or two a week.

Just What Does Dust Do to a PC?

PCs hate dust, but they are very good at accumulating it. Every time their internal fans turn, drawing in air to keep its inner workings cool, they also draw in thousands of dust particles as well. You may have heard before that dust can slow a computer down and affect its performance but how bad is the dust problem really?

One of a computer repair person's most common tasks is to clean out a dirty, dusty PC. Given that dust is the documented number one cause of PC failure, it is a frequent issue that a computer tech encounters when he or she first opens up a PC case to begin a diagnosis.

Just how badly dust affects a computer's performance was recently explained to me by a friend who makes a very nice living from repairing all kinds of computers, many suffering from problems related to dust disease.

He had a personal computer in the shop because its owner felt it was running too slowly and various software fixes did not seem to be improving matters very much.

As I had been asking about the effect of dust on the average computer my friend said this might be a good machine to run a simple test on, as it belonged to a person who had a habit of smoking around his computer. My friend said even before opening it up he was pretty sure he was going to find a good amount of dust inside. Sure enough there was. The dust was present in layers of varying thickness all over the inside of the computer. The fans were covered in a dark brown layer so thick I was personally surprised that they were working at all.

To run his test the tech closed the case back up and took measurements of the CPU temperature and fan speed that the computer was currently running at without any programs running at all. The CPU clocked in at 118.4° F (48° C) and the fan speed was 2,857 rpm.

The clean up took a while, not such great news for the owner since my friend charges by the hour, but I was impressed by just how clean the CPU and heat sinks looked once he was done. Painstakingly he cleared as much of the dirt dust and grime out of computer's insides as he could.

Once he was done he closed the case and ran his measurements again. The CPU was now running at 102.2° F (39° C) and the fans at 3,276 rpm. A simple cleaning had reduced the temperature of the CPU by an extra 16.2° F (9° C) and increased the fan speed by 419 rpm.

According to my friend, this simple cleaning would increase the speed of the computer and the response times of the programs it ran, as well as extending the life of the CPU and its heat sink fans. The cost? Two hours at $60 an hour. As a bonus my friend said he would be giving the newly speedy PC's owner a couple of tips when he returned to pick it up. Firstly, don't smoke around it, but even if you stop that the dust will still build up again if left unchecked. Secondly, he was also going to give the owner a sample of a product he had recently encountered, a self stick filter that cost under $10 for 3 sheets that went over the computer's air intakes to trap dust before it entered.

DVD Replication on Demand - How the DVD Replication Industry is Moving Towards a Boutique Model

CD and DVD replication plants are suffering, there is no one in the industry left who (privately at least) does not talk about the mass replication industry being in the last throes of decline. Large plants are closing with increasing regularity across Europe, Asia and America. The large volume orders are chased by an ever increasing pack of hungry DVD replicator's sales teams and independent brokers.

On top of all this raw material costs have gone up meaning that the rock bottom pricing of 2006/7 is confined to history. The high cost of Blu-ray replication has also meant that not all replicators are able to jump on to this growing format.

The covermount industry, once seen as the saviour of the DVD replication industry is fizzling fast, as consumers are no longer attracted to the prospect of yet another free film that is unlikely to get watched, and the newspaper industry succumbs to the advance of live news on the web and rolling news channels.

Against this bleak backdrop there is still a market for films and entertainment content on disc. DVD replication facilities have to adapt to the lower volume demand of small distributors who can make a profit by selling 1000 copies of a film on DVD. This is not the blockbuster territory that is still enjoying a few summer hits, but people passionate about film, typically running the entire distribution and fulfillment via home and an Amazon retailers account.

To service these customers, DVD replication plants need to have better customer service. Large movie studios and their distributors have teams of people to deal with production issues but a small film distributor won't have the artwork and production experience to manage this side of the DVD replication process. This is where medium sized DVD replication brokers can help. With the experience to deal with production issues and the need for a number of smaller clients the mutual attraction is evident. Most brokers of any size will also be placing high enough volumes of DVD replication to command keen pricing from plants, allowing a margin without pricing the project out of the market.

On demand has recently been taken to a new level with some retailers introducing DVD publishing systems (such as that made by Rimage) into stores. Here the content is stored on servers and a disc is not made until the point that the consumer orders. This cuts down on expensive stock sitting around depreciating fast, but the consumer needs to re-adjust to accepting a recordable disc. Now with the arrival of secure copy protection systems for DVDR (such as the Fortium system) and CSS for recordable discs the major studios are more receptive to this idea.

Some large volume DVD duplication companies have taken this one step further and offer low volume, on demand DVD production. Using state of the art UV cured digital DVD printers a high quality, retail quality disc can be printed in very low volumes. Artwork and masters are stored on servers allowing paper parts and discs to be generated in low volumes, typically 10's or low hundreds rather than the thousands required by DVD replication. This allows a large catalogue to be held by the distributor without the prohibitive cost of holding stock for each title. This is particularly suitable to specialist content distributors dealing in art, foreign language and documentaries - the other end of the Will Smith blockbuster spectrum.

This small scale on demand DVD replication model (strictly speaking DVD duplication) will mean a much smaller disc industry overall but one that should be able to survive for many years while the YouTube and paid for streaming market take over the rest of the video entertainment market.

A laser printer can cut your cost per page with lesser needs for refilling/replacing cartridges, noiseless operation and better text quality but it's the inkjet printers that still hold their own in several ways. For example:

Also, there's the under-$80 Epson WorkForce 30 Inkjet Printer that blazes through documents with quality matching laser printing. It's ideal for the home office and a budget-conscious customer.

Today the technology has advanced to such an extent that you can choose the color printers that suits your style and comfort-zone. But this elaborate choice alone brings a problem to find the best one for you. Computer Training - Continuing Problems and a New Solution

Most people say they are users of Word (or Excel, Powerpoint, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, etc.). Yet if I then ask them to perform some relatively simple task beyond just typing, they usually seem totally stumped. Unfortunately, as someone famous may or may not have said, "if they don't know what they don't know, how will they know what they need to know". This is the computer training conundrum.

Employers will assume that self-professed "users" of common programs understand and employ the such programs efficiently and effectively in their every day work. We generally expect people's computer skills to be similar to reading and writing; most people who join the workforce should be reasonably good at it. This may be why costly computer training in common computer tasks is rarely provided in the workplace. To add to this litany of woes, universities no longer appear teach the usage of popular software, expecting this to have been done at school. I'm not aware that schools are filling this gap, and many lecturers and school teachers I know have little to no computer skills themselves.

So ... the majority people have learned their computer skills through trial and error, reference manuals, help from friends & colleagues, intuition, osmosis, alien abduction, etc. Apart from the latter, which makes it difficult to sit still for long periods, everything is fine and dandy except you remain only knowing what you know, and what you know may well be wrong, inefficient, a compatibility method left-over from some ancient version, and so on. There is still no understanding of relevance, importance, perspective, and how to be self-reliant when things go pear-shaped. (For readers outside the British Commonwealth, pear-shaped is the London opposite of Australia's she's apples [mate], or otherwise just means shaped like a pear). This ezine article seems to be getting fruit-y, a term which ...

But, hey, shouldn't everyone be able to pick up how to do things properly. Computers, operating systems and programs are designed with GUI's and ease-of-use in mind. Eh? Yeah, RIGHT! Think of the hundreds of millions of people around the world in business, science, public service, working at 80% efficiency on their computers (a charitable estimate). If we could raise this figure to just 90%, imagine the massive effect on world GDP. The additional time devoted to achieving constructive thought and action rather than battling sofware might contribute to the cure for cancer, world peace, colonies on Mars, smarter Miss Universe contestants, the end of hip-hop, etc. If those ambitions are too lofty, it would certainly lead to happier, less stressed and more productive staff, employers, students, writers, business people, etc. (notice I didn't include administrators, politicians and clergy in the list).

If you think that this is a cynical appraisal of general computer usage, what will I say about 'Computer Training'? It's got to be good thing, hasn't it? We-e-e-ell ...

With experience of IT support dating back way back to mainframes, punched cards, pterodactyls, etc., having attended numerous technical and business courses, and more recently specialising as a trainer, I have observed that:

* training choices by individuals are often poor (e.g. learning Photoshop is pointless if you have no natural flair for design, Excel is dangerous unless you are good with numbers)
* each of us has a preferred best method of learning, e.g. overview vs. detail, graphic vs verbal, serious vs humourous, lecture vs discussion, theory vs practical, etc., but rarely does a course employ the training method that best suits us
* traditional computer training typically involves a whole exhausting day in a darkened air-conditioned room with people of widely-ranging skills and experience. For some, the course may be either too advanced, or else maddeningly slow
* training companies often set arbitrary expertise levels regarding what is taught, such as Introduction/Intermediate/Advanced, but then remarkably allow potential customers to self stream. Big mistake. This may be good for revenue but it is a headache for the class trainer and is very annoying for attendees when it becomes obvious that some in the class have badly misjudged their own level of competence

My Little Red Book of Computer Training says:

1. For all-day courses, the afternoon is pretty much a waste of everyone's time. a. Morning peak alertness cannot be maintained, post- lunch is the Bermuda Triangle of mental agility, and by 3pm everyone is watching the clock and itching to leave b. Increasing wear and tear on the presenter causes decreasing classroom energy levels
2. When a course involves attendees from different organisations: a. They compete for the presenter's attention to focus on their specific issues which are often irrelevant to the rest of the group b. There's always at least ONE person who slows the course or is just annoying and disruptive
3. With large groups, individuals cannot receive personal attention
4. Most training organisations offer inflexible course schedules while also reserving the right to cancel courses due to insufficient numbers ... and they often exercise that right (as a contract trainer, I've been "cancelled" one working day before a day that I had to reserve weeks in advance)
5. When attendees return to their organisations, they are obliged to catch up on their everyday work that backed up while they were away on training (the insinuation from colleagues will be that it was "time off"). At least 24 hours will elapse before they can put anything they've learned into practice, assuming they can remember it.
6. 80% of general computer work uses only 20% of the available features, yet so many training courses get side-tracked on "bells and whistles". Why get hung up on long-hand menu-based or function-key procedures whereas a right-click will suffice most of the time to provide context-sensitive options.
7. Once people understand the contextual use of a program, have overviewed its capabilities, strengths and weaknesses, and used the basic features with confidence, they only need pointers regarding the best methods to find out how to do other things. My view therefore is that "Advanced" courses will never help anyone who can't absorb and apply the basics, while the more capable users should be able to figure the additional features for themselves (just like after buying and using a basic DIY toolkit, you add new tools one at a time only if and when your work demands them, and you can afford the time and cost)
8. Presenters should be brave enough to highlight software weaknesses (are they scared that Microsoft and Adobe will beat them up?) e.g.: yes, you CAN do Excel-style maths in Word, but you'd be MAD to do so as by default there is no real-time calculation; yes, you can create macros in Office products, but will you and others gamble on opening a file when the security sirens are going off ... is it your macro or a real virus?
9. Relevant computer history and perspective helps people to understand that no program is ever perfect, why some applications seem to have been built by committee (answer: they HAVE!), and that checking your work is important (we tend to assume that computers can be trusted) ...
10. ... problems are rarely due to stupidity, so people need some basic Get Out Of Jail Free procedures for when things start to fall apart and the deadline is looming.

To address as many shortcoming as possible, I have put my money where my mouth is and created a boutique training facility that is unique on the Gold Coast (Australia):

* Class sizes are a maximum of four
* Classes are restricted to people from the same organisation, or groups of friends. Attendees therefore never have to deal with strangers, allowing them more freedom to admit difficulties and to ask questions. It also provides me with the freedom to tailor the presentation to cover their personal scenarios and even use their own sample files that they are encouraged to bring to the class. Anyone who is "slow" tends to be naturally supported by colleagues without any ill-feeling
* Class bookings are never cancelled. It even means one-to-one training if I accept the booking.
* My short courses never exceed four hours. A morning session is preferred so that the course finishes by lunchtime. People leave fresh, motivated, and able to put their new skills into immediate practice before the end of their working day.
* I focus on being efficient and productive in the core element and whatever issues the attendees want explored, and I highlight the traps for the unwary.
* The training room supports learning by using natural daylight and fresh air whenever possible
* On leaving, attendees get a set of relevant browser bookmarks and carefully selected freeware to assist them in further self-learning and everyday computing tasks

DC Power in the Data Center - Myths

As a proponent and engineer of DC power plants and distribution systems for data centers, I've been interested to read some rather misinformed diatribes about why DC power shouldn't be used in data centers. In this article, I'll address these myths.

"DC power is limited to 48VDC because any higher voltage won't break an arc."

This statement is a combination of a quarter true (but out of context) and three quarters incorrect. 48VDC is indeed a common standard, having been used in the telephone industry since the very beginning of automatic switching systems. In later years, this has also become a standard for DC powered network equipment, driven by the movement of data networking equipment and servers into the telephone office.

There are a number of different reasons for the use of 48VDC as a standard (not the least of which is that it's touch safe), but telephone environments also typically use 120-130VDC up to 190VDC.

So, where does "won't break an arc" come from? It applies only to circuit breakers. The AC sine wave helps to extinguish the arc inside a circuit breaker when it trips. Does this mean we can't use circuit breakers with DC? No, it means we simply have to use circuit breakers rated for DC use. Myth #1 busted.

"DC power needs huge expensive copper bus bars that are a nighmare to hang."

It is true that 48VDC power requires larger conducters than 120VAC or 208VAC, however, the issue is far from as bad as it's made to sound. First, there is approximately a 20% energy saving involved in eliminating all the AC-DC conversions in an AC powered data center. Compare the reduced cost of the energy saving to the requirement for larger conductors. Also, the 20% efficiency boost means smaller conductors than might otherwise be expected. Second, consider using a higher DC voltage to provide the same power at lower current (since we busted myth #1), just same way AC power does.

So why not just use higher AC voltages? Since almost no data center equipment uses voltages higher than 240VAC directly, this means transformers to reduce the voltage. Transformers mean more waste and more heat from that waste that needs to be removed from the data center, requiring more energy and equipment expense for cooling systems. DC on the other hand uses efficient solid state DC-DC converters, saving energy and reducing heat in the data center. Myth #2 busted.

"I've seen data centers with DC power and nobody wanted to use it so it must be worthless."

You can't just build something and hope somebody will just happen along and want it. DC power in the data center has to be promoted as a selling point for the data center and customers have to be encouraged with at least some of the rewards of the savings.

DC power in the data center is good for the environment and good for the wallet and those should be the only reasons required for everyone to adopt it!

This is because of the volume that is needed of a specific CD that contains content that needs to be duplicated. Just think for a moment if there was nothing like CD Duplication, how can massive amounts of a data be copied in a relative short time span? The answer is obvious. Duplication is just a small example of how technology has evolved, and how it is possible to achieve the copying of massive amounts of data in a short time period. It is truly a great process that can go unnoticed even though it is so noticeable.

Cooling the Data Center With an Old Idea

With the cost of power increasing and the electrical requirements of the modern data center skyrocketing, data center designers are focused on ways to reduce cost by reducing not only the power required to run the servers in the data center, but the cost of removing the heat generated by those servers. In this article, I'll be talking about going back to the past for answers to these needs.

Before the common availability of electricity, designers of large buildings had to use ingenuity to provide light and ventilation to their buildings. In the massive textile mills of the 1800s, this was done with clerestory or eyebrow monitors. A clerestory monitor is a raise section of flat roof that contains windows around the side that can be opened. An eyebrow monitor is a raised section in a pitched roof that contains windows that normally much smaller than a clerestory monitor.

In operation, the clerestory monitor provides large amounts of natural light, and an efficient path for outside air to flow through the open windows, unlike a simple skylight that allows light in but very little airflow. The eyebrow monitor operates in much the same way, just on a smaller scale.

In use in the data center, cooler exterior air is brought in at ground level vents for the intakes of the servers, then vented up vertically. Venting the exhaust air from the server cabinets is the only step of the process that requires assistance, only to be sure that the hot exhaust air doesn't remix with the cooler intake air. Once away from the equipment, the hot air will continue to rise by simple convection until it's removed by the cross flow of air through the clerestory monitor. Note that the air flowing across the clerestory monitor doesn't have to be cold or even cool, it simply has to be moving.The air flow through the clerestory monitor and the operation of the exhaust vent fans from the equipment combine to create a vacuum that will help to draw in the ground level intake vents.

So why not just use ground level venting? Because, the clerestory monitor will separate the cooler intake air from the hot exhaust air. Venting directly across the data center will cause turbulence, recirculating of hot air, and hot spots.

It's easy to see that this system is the ultimate in energy efficiency, requiring only simple exhaust fans to insure that the intake and exhaust air from the servers doesn't mix. It's also very easy to regulate for different outside air conditions by simply opening or closing windows in the clerestory monitor. It shouldn't even be necessary to adjust the ground level intake vents at all!

How can we make the most efficient use of this type of cooling? First of all, make sure that the clerestory monitor and the intake vents are adequately sized for the space they will be venting. Second, make sure the clerestory monitor is oriented with the long side toward the prevailing winds for the area to provide maximum flow. Third, avoid using this type of cooling in areas with little or no natural airflow or areas with extremely high ambient temperatures.

Reducing energy consumption in the data center is as looking to the past, before we learned to take modern marvels such as air conditioning for granted.
